For the new West Coast headquarters of a global social justice organization, we re-envisioned a 1986, 38,500-square-foot office building. Inspired by the group’s mission of “defend and protect,” we explore the architectural concepts of shelter within society. Waterjet-cut metal panels serve as security scrims and sun screens, providing a distinctive street presence. Such panels continue into the two courtyards, as wind partitions, privacy curtains, and guardrails, and into the interiors as dividers, wall treatments, and details. The building includes community collaboration spaces, task force crisis center, event hall, media studio, creative workspace, and employee lounges. Within the two atriums—known as the “living room” and “family room”—amphitheater stairs function as assembly space, informal work area, and a place to socialize.
