A Place of Gathering

We have created a place of gathering – a place where the city, the sun, the beach, the ocean, and the horizon can connect as one ensemble. This civic project recognizes the importance of choice for its visitors.  Our scheme argues for what could happen, instead of what should happen.

The redesign of the well known pier and its surrounding waterfront centers on a new brick plaza. This gathering space is a blank ‘canvas.’ Events are not programmed, but merely suggested by the plaza’s tilts, slopes, tears and tucks. Suspended under the pier are wood and steel fishing platforms, activating a unique space above the ocean and under the pier. Phase 1 completed. Awarded 1995 Merit Award, The American Institute of Architects, Cabrillo Chapter.
