Wrapping Plane

The urban-scale gesture of the ‘wrapping plane’ delivers order and relief to the dense architecture of this 213,000 square foot digital library. Structured in steel and clad in wood, this iconic wrapping form makes its presence evident throughout the entire building.

The wrapping plane starts as the library’s welcome mat: plaza and civic entry steps. The plane continues through the glass wall stepping down as amphitheater seating. Rising and curving up five levels, it becomes floor, wall and ceiling. The wrapping plane carves an enormous reading room out of a block of information. Floating within the community space are: stairs, elevators, reading platforms, and meeting rooms. Invited international design competition, awarded Second Place.
