Seven Studies for a House on a Hill

Over a 10-year study for a couple, our design process displays the design of a house that followed the evolution of a client: from young couple, to adulthood, to married life, to married with children. All seven design studies address similar themes: domesticity, views of the city, design for a steep slope, flexible living and entertaining, and breaking new aesthetic ground.

1) The “Wrapping House” has an upper level of loft living, dining and kitchen framed in a continuously wrapping floor/wall/roof. 2) The “Glass Courtyard House” carves out an exterior space on a mountainside with the residence creating the perimeter. 3) The “Adult/Child House” comprises two buildings: playful and energetic living for children vs. sophisticated, subtle living for adults. 4) The “Floating Addition” lifts a glass-box addition of bedrooms over the existing residence. 5) The “Public Private House” offers a signature and sculptural home of two distinct forms: the public is the living, dining, and kitchen, and private is the bedrooms, bathroom and home office. 6) The “Point” creates a sculptural icon on a hillside and points a double height living space and rooftop amphitheater toward the views. 7) Lastly, the “Additions for a House on a Hill” study an aggressive juxtaposition of old and new.
