Inserting Modernity into History

The renovation of the historic Men’s Gymnasium, built in 1931, is twofold: 1) the restoration and seismic upgrade of the landmark structure and exterior, and 2) a contrasting contemporary transformation of the interior. We have inserted modern architecture into the historic fabric of the Lombardian Romanesque style.

The new interior experience centers on a double height, circular atrium defined by a circular scrim made of stainless steel mesh over copper woven fabric. Maple wall panels recall the wood floor of the renovated gymnasium on the upper level. Terrazzo floors, green glass channel planks, translucent resin panels, steel grating ceiling panels, and exposed steel structure bridge complete the modern ensemble. The 103,000 square foot building includes programs such as Student Services, Cultural and Recreational Affairs, Community Programs, athletics, and RTOC.
